Storm ravages Goldthwaite area

The storm that blew through Mills County Thursday night brought several inches of rain, and wind up to 70 mph, locals are reporting.
The severe winds caused tree damage all over town, and several power outages, according to city employee Ronald Cagle.
Cagle said crews were at work from 5:30 p.m. Thursday night until 1 a.m. Friday morning, restoring electricity to several locations. He said there were about 100 people without electricity at different times, and the city lost some transformers due to the lightning. He explained the crews respond to calls based on urgency; for instance, they respond to the nursing homes before the other residences and so forth.
Cagle went on to say the city park would be closed Friday as crews discovered several broken tree limbs which could be hazardous; the Goldthwaite Municipal Golf Course was also closed Friday for the same reason.
He noted TxDOT would be responsible for getting the traffic lights in town back on line.
Cagle said the city’s rain gauge showed we received at least 4 inches in less than an hour Thursday night.
The Eagle will continue to gather storm damage information and rain reports for a full story.

Local Chrysler, GM dealers remain open

By Tammarrah Pledger
Our local Chrysler and General Motors car dealerships have survived the cut. For now.
CNN reported late last week that Chrysler and General Motors announced they would reduce their dealer base in the U.S. Chrysler will close 789 dealers, while General Motors announced the closing of 1,100 dealers. For Chrysler, this leaves them with about 2,400 stores across the country. General Motors aims to reduce to 3,600 dealers by the end of 2010, reports indicate.
Lee Hoffpauir, owner of General Motors dealerships in Goldthwaite, Lampasas and Marble Falls, reportedly told The Lampasas Dispatch Record that his dealerships were not on the list to be closed.
Johnny Marsh, who runs the Goldthwaite GM dealership for Hoffpauir, confirmed the report, saying the local business is still “good to go.”
General Motors, reports indicate, based their cuts on customer satisfaction scores and sales.
Marsh said the local dealership is consistently the highest seller in the Southwest Region, which encompasses several states.
“We’re always in the top ten percent,” Marsh said, adding “we work very hard at that.”
Marsh agreed with Hoffpauir’s assertion that while sales took a sharp dive through the fall and winter, sales have been going up since about March.
“We’re seeing signs of life,” Marsh said, adding business at the local dealership is headed in the right direction once again.
Elsewhere, Chas Bayer, owner of Bayer Motor Co., including Bayer GMC, in Comanche, told The Comanche Chief his dealership also made General Motor’s cut.
“Bayer Motor Co. Inc., is safe from GM dealership closings,” he told The Comanche Chief.
Kathy Brumbalow of Brumbalow Motors in Hamilton said her dealership also weathered the storm, telling The Eagle Thursday, “We’re still here.”
Brumbalow, who co-owns the dealership with her husband, Ben, said they were relieved to get their letter telling them the dealership would remain open.
“So far, so good,” she said.
John Stanley, sales manager at Bruner Auto Group in Brownwood, said the dealership there has received no word indicating they would have to close. To the best of his knowledge, he said, the dealership will remain open.

Wednesday, May 20th

The Eagles will take on DeLeon in a best of three series Friday and Saturday at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. The Eagles will play Friday at 5 pm, Saturday at 10 am and potentially at 1 pm for a tie-breaker. GO EAGLES!

Goldthwaite Band Concert will be held Thursday at 6:30 pm at Eagle Gym.

Blood Drive will be heald at CTTC Thursday from 1-6 pm at 1012 Reilly in Goldthwaite.

Steve, As maybe one of the more southern readers (Costa Rica)of the Early Bird, I really appreciate what your doing. Given the mail system in Costa Rica, I probably wouldn't get the regular 2008 issues until 2009. Keep it up! Lance A. Barnett, Eagle Class of '89

Congratulations Steven and all of The Eagle family on the "new arrival!" Please consider my subscription switched over to the e-paper and register me as an Early Bird. It will save my mom the trouble and expense of mailing me the print version every week like she has done for the past 20+ years since I've been in Hawaii. Love all of the columnists - Tammarrah, Mike, and Georgie. Keep up the good work! ~Marilyn Roberts Nonaka

Steve: I think you should have given people a little more time to check out the on line paper before you blocked it so people can't read it and see if they liked it. Just a thought!
